Post-war Tokyo, alive with the energy of reconstruction.
In Sumida — where the culture of making has been rooted since the Edo era,
drawing countless factories and craftspeople —
Hagoromo Shirt was founded in 1954.
It began when founder Torahei Kawamura left a shirt manufacturer
to start his own business producing and wholesaling dress shirts.
The name "Hagoromo" derives from the legend of the heavenly robe
at Miho no Matsubara in Shizuoka — the birthplace of our founder.
"Building Our Own Factory and Expanding Manufacturing"
The company grew by relocating its headquarters within Sumida.
In 1965, a sewing factory was established at the head office,
enabling in-house production.
In 1966, the company was reorganized
and launched a new chapter as Hagoromo Shirt Co., Ltd.
"Into the Era of Casual Shirts"
As Japan's high economic growth era brought greater diversity in fashion,
Hagoromo Shirt expanded beyond dress shirts
into the casual shirt market.
In 1973, a dedicated young casual shirt factory
was established in Yoshida-cho, Shizuoka,
further strengthening our production capabilities.
"Strengthening Production and Building a Solid Corporate Foundation"
In 1988, the company acquired land for its own factory and relocated to the current site,
establishing a stable foundation for manufacturing.
In 1993, Masatoshi Kawamura assumed the role of President and Representative Director,
guiding the company into a new era under fresh leadership.
"Connecting Through Making in a Changing World"
From the 2000s onward, the apparel industry entered a period of major transformation.
The rise of overseas production centered on China, the growth of SPA brands and fast fashion,
and the rapid expansion of online retail all reshaped the market and its distribution structures.
Major disruptions continued with the global financial crisis, the Great East Japan Earthquake,
and the COVID-19 pandemic — events that shook society as a whole.
Through it all, Hagoromo Shirt continued manufacturing with shirts at its core.
As a new generation of employees joined the team,
the accumulated skills and experience of decades were passed on,
and the company moved forward into the next era of making.
"From Sumida, to the World. The Evolution Continues."
In 2022, Yasuhiko Imai assumed the role of President and Representative Director.
With shirt-making as its roots, Hagoromo Shirt took a bold new step forward.
Honoring its sewing expertise and spirit of making, the company expanded OEM for overseas brands and wholesale to international markets.
It also advanced initiatives suited to the times — including items featuring Japanese traditional designs for inbound visitors, and corporate and event uniform production.
In 2026, our first flagship store opened in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo —
a neighborhood where diverse cultures meet — serving as a new hub for connecting with customers.
It all began with a single shirt, crafted in post-war Tokyo.
Those skills and that spirit continue — from Sumida, to Japan, and to the world.
Hagoromo Shirt's journey in making will keep evolving.
